TRAGIC NEWS REPORTED BY RAQUEL GILL: Terrorists destroy New York’s World Trade Center by crashing two hi-jacked airliners into the twin-towers. Another hi-jacked plane strikes US military air quarters at the Pentagon in Washington. President Bush says Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in the United States will be met with the steel of the nation’s resolve. The casualty toll from the Tuesday’s attacks rises rapidly as reports are coming from the crash sites. I’m Raquel Gill. Stay with us for the latest on the most devastating terrorist attack ever against the United States. Go ahead on this hour of VOA news now. … First the news.

JEFF FINCH: I’m Jeff Finch, VOA news. … President Bush says Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in New York City and at the Pentagon near Washington have failed to frighten the American people and will be met with the steel of the nation’s resolve. In the nation’s wide-broadcast from the White House late Tuesday Mr. Bush said that the US government continues to function without interruption. The president said that he has directed the full resources of the government to bring to justice those responsible for what he called “acts of mass murder”. He also warned that the United States make no distinction between the terrorists and those who harbor them. Attorney General John Ashcrow, the USA top law enforcement official said every effort be made to apprehend those responsible for the deadly attack.

JOHN ASHCROW: These hideous acts of violence are an assault on the security of our nation. They are an assault on the security and freedom of every American citizen. We will not tolerate such acts. We will expend every effort and devote all the necessary resources to bring the people responsible for these acts, these crimes to justice.

JEFF FINCH: It is believed that thousands of lives were lost Tuesday when terrorists hi-jacked two commercial airliners and smashed them twenty minutes apart into the twin-towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. A third commercial airliner crashed into the Pentagon outside Washington killing as many as eight hundred people. A fourth hi-jacked airliner crashed in Pennsylvania. These stunning events have brought the United States to a standstill. Large areas of New York City remain sealed off. All US commercial air traffic is grounded and no trading is expected today in the US financial markets. US military forces worldwide have been put on the highest state of alert following Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in New York City and near the Pentagon in Washington. US Atlantic Fleet deployed two aircraft carriers off the East coast of the country to provide air defences for Washington and New York. Warships are also reported to have been sent to West coast sides considered vulnerable to attack. The USA aircraft carrier “Enterprise”, which was preparing to return from the Persian Gulf has been ordered to remain in the region. Authorities have also claimed tight restrictions on access to all US military bases. US officials say there is growing evidence against Saudi fugitive Osama Bin Laden to the terror attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon [`pэnteg(e)n]]. Government officials say list of passengers on board the four airplanes that were hi-jacked Tuesday include the names of suspected terrorists linked to Osama Bin Laden. Also, a senator says US intelligence intercepted communications between supporters of Mr. Bin Laden as they discussed the attacks on New York and Washington. Senior US official has told the reporters they feel there is strong evidence linking Mr. Bin Laden to the terrorist assault. Meanwhile, a newspaper in Pakistan Br. [pa:ki`sta:n] Am. [pэke`stэn] says the statement has been issued … er … Mr. Bin Laden’s name saying he was not involved in the USA terror attacks, but he supports them. Israeli [iz`reili] Health Ministry has called for blood donations for US relief needs. Prime Minister Arial Sharon has pledged Israeli’s help to track down those responsible for the terrorist attacks in the US. And as we hear from correspondent Lorry [`lori] Casmen [`kэsmen] in Jerusalem [dжe`ru:selem], Israeli security has been increased substantially as a precautionary measure.

LORRY CASMEN Israeli Prime Minister Arial Sharon has offered his condolences and his support for the US fight against terrorism.

ARIAL SHARON The fight against terror is an international struggle of the free world against the forces of darkness who seek to destroy our liberty and our way of life. I believe that together we can defeat these forces of evil.

LORRY CASMEN In the aftermath of the Tuesday’s tragedy Israelis [iz`reiliz] are lining up to donate blood for US relief efforts. But Israel [`izreil] also has increased security in and around its borders and sealed off the Palestinian [pэli`stinien] territories. There is no traffic in or out of the Gaza Strip. Some Palestinians have celebrated the terrorist operations, but others feared that they pay the price and so the efforts to secure peace in the Middle East. … Lorry Casmen, VOA news, Jerusalem.

JEFF FINCH: Arab leaders are expressing horror and dismay at the attacks in the United States while much of public opinion in the Arab capitals welcomes the attack as a payback for USA support of Israel. Palestinian leader Yaser Arafat, though, said he was completely condemning the attacks which he labelled as the crime against humanity. Governments around the world have condemned the deadly attacks against the United States and are offering any support that might be needed, made their pledges that those responsible for the attacks on New York and Washington would not go unpunished. United Nations General Secretary Coffi Anan says he utterly condemns the attacks. Many world leaders broke off normal business for a crisis meeting concerning the attack. I’m Jeff Finch, VOA news.

RAQUEL GILL: This is VOA news. Now in Washington it’s seven hours six Universal Time. I’m Raquel Gill. … In just a few hours Don will cast a tragic shadow over rescue and recovery efforts at what was once the World Trade Centre in New York City and at one side of the Pentagon, US Defence Department Headquarters just outside Washington. Ashen identified terrorists hi-jacked two commercial airliners and smashed them twenty minutes apart into the twin-towers of the World Trade Center in New York City Tuesday. A third commercial airliner crashed into the Pentagon. One side of the five-sided structure was set ablaze and collapsed. A fourth hi-jacked airliner crashed in Pennsylvania. President Bush says thousands of lives were suddenly ended by the despicable terrorist attacks. At the White House Tuesday evening Mr. Bush reinforced US determination to find and bring to justice those responsible for the most horrendous terrorist attack ever on American soil. President Bush said it was an attack on freedom and that freedom will be defended.

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH Today our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack and a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in the offices. Secretaries, businessmen, women, military and federal workers, mums and dads, friends and neighbors, thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil; despicable acts of terror. The pictures of airplanes found in the buildings, fires burning, huge-huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation in chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend our great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our greatest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. This act shakes our steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we are the brightest beacon for freedom, an opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining. …

RAQUEL GILL: President Bush. … Large areas of New York City remain sealed off, the search rescue efforts continue, all US commercial air traffic is grounded. The casualty toll from Tuesday’s terrorist attacks is rising rapidly as reports are coming from the crash sites. The final death toll is expected to be in the thousands. About fifty thousand people normally worked in the levels of the World Trade Center in New York. …
