NARRATOR - рассказчик: This is the best to talk to America. Today we’re going to talk about why your dog, cat or hamster is good for your health with Dr. Dan Carry, (who is) a veterinarian and director of Technical Communications at the Iam’s Company which produces pet food.

HOSTESS - ведущая: Dr. Carry, we’ll talk about pets. Will we be distinguishing those animals who become part of the human family, are we not?

DR. CARRY - доктор Кэрри: Yes, we are … because there are different applications if you will … er … The relationship that we have with dogs and cats, habitually with dogs. We’ll see some working relationships where dogs are security dogs and dogs that are guard dogs. Dogs that, perhaps, help with flocks of sheep or cattle or geese or other livestock. But the ones that are most interesting, they will probably spend our time on today, are the ones that do become part of the family, and that’s a special relationship that, more or less, certainly, for years, really has been more and more recognized, and more and more accepted as an okay thing by people everywhere.

HOSTESS: In fact, it’s been taken more seriously, and I understand, the National Institutes of Health actually conduct research on this connection. I find it interesting that you describe it as a veterinarian you describe it as this interesting relationship because so many of us, while we may adore our pets, do think of it as somewhat whimsical. It is not.

DR. CARRY: No, it’s not. And it’s not VP or anything like that. When I was in practice, I had big, huge strapping men coming with toy poodles. And once the exam-room door was shut, they would admit that there was their dog, and when the door was open and the other people … in the waiting room might be able to hear, “That’s my wife’s dog, and I’m bringing this dog in.” And you close the door and there you’re very concerned about this dog. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with establishing that kind of relationship with your pet.

HOSTESS: That relationship is very different and, I mean I speak from personal experience and I’m sure that many people, who were tuned in today, know the experience. But how would you describe it or characterize it?

DR. CARRY: It’s an interesting one because the dog or the cat or, as you indicate it birds, become part of the family. But they become a part of the family that’s a little different even than your spouse or even your children, which is again, not to say, that those are unimportant relationships, but it’s a different relationship, one in which, typically, a human recognizes that they are the sole provider for their pet. And that, this pet isn’t going to change as it grows older. It’s not going to become independent; it’s not gonna ask for the keys to the car, it’s not gonna go out on dates, and so forth. Although, there may be an exception there. So there is a little bit of a different relationship and the one that we sort of enjoy when we are parents of very young children. But yet, that doesn’t really change, as the pet grows older.

HOSTESS: There is one thing that a lot of pet owners here in the United States, that I’ve mentioned, I’m sure it’s-it’s sort of true cross cultures, and that is that people tend to seem to be able to relate to animals that they pass on the street, most better, more lovingly than they do to human strangers on the street. What do you make of that?

DR. CARRY: It’s-it’s really fascinating because dogs, being walked, can be great icebreakers. And I think it’s because dogs and cats are non-judgemental. If you say something to them, they don’t criticize what you said, they don’t pause and say, “Hmm. … Does she really mean-n that? – or – What’s gonna happen next?” They take you for what you would say and they accept you as you are, and because of that it makes it a very nice … icebreaker when you’re walking down the street. But it’s also the reason that we can sit at home, curl up in the chair and have a cat or a dog join us, and we can talk to them and tell-tell them things that we probably wouldn’t tell another human.

HOSTESS: Of course, … er … animals, p-particularly dogs, are tending to be trained to live in a home and live well and they don’t always like the kind of discipline that’s enforced on them. But they don’t react with that kind of judgement to the owner…

DR. CARRY: Typically not. Now, there are some breeds of dogs that are bred to be a little more discriminating. Some of those guard-dog types and, but … for the most part, we must remember that dogs are pack animals, and throughout evolution, they have been … bred and re-bred to work together as a group. And within their group, they accept … there’s gonna be a leader and then there will be followers. And dogs then accept discipline as long as it’s consistent, and as long as it’s consequent. There are two things that we always wanna make sure we do. Which is the way we should raise our kids and it’s the way most of us do. So as long as they understand that this is what was being said yesterday and it’s probably what’s gonna be said tomorrow in terms of discipline, they accept it because you’re then their leader of the pack.

HOSTESS: So there’s no judgement, no personalization involved as there might be with another human being who disciplines … er … someone.

DR. CARRY: No, this is, in their mind, the way it is and that’s okay.

HOSTESS: You mentioned pack dogs that had been bred this way … I’m wondering about the breeding of pets what we often call domesticated animals. What-what have they been bred to do? I mean, have … Were they just made for human …? Did human beings essentially make these animals in some ways?

DR. CARRY: It-it’s a fascinating subject, but to a certain degree yes, but to a large degree no. If we look at two different dogs, let’s take a Corgi, which is a … er … dog from the British Isles that typically was used to herd sheep, and so forth. Little, timid, short legs and so forth. And look at an Irish wolfhound from the same British Isles. What a huge dog! And bred to-to hound wolves when wolves were a problem. Those two dogs, as dramatically different as they look, still share almost all the same genes. And the difference in them is simply the minor amplification of some characteristics, which makes them really quite similar more than they are dissimilar.

HOSTESS: And that is truly amazing. …
